Mercedes Siles Molina
Professor of Algebra at the University of Malaga and full member of the Malaga Academy of Sciences (AMC). She has been the general director of the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA). She is a member of the Advisory Board of the Hermes Institute and a director of the Gadea Foundation for Science. She combines her work as a researcher, currently on honest algorithms for human development, with knowledge transfer activities: management, dissemination, equality and equity, development cooperation, etc. She has published more than sixty scientific articles and books, among which the one dedicated to Leavitt’s Path Algebras stands out, unique in its field. She has also published works on the dissemination of art and mathematics, and on management and equality issues.
She has been president of the Spanish Committee of Mathematics (CEMat), vice-president of the Royal Spanish Mathematical Society (RSME) and scientific director of the International Centre for Pure and Applied Mathematics (CIMPA). She has visited as a researcher and lecturer and collaborated scientifically and academically with: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Korea, the United States, France, Great Britain, India, Italy, Iran, Japan, Mexico, Panama, Portugal, Senegal, Turkey, Tunisia, Venezuela, among others.
He has served on accreditation and evaluation panels for academic and research activity, and awards, in Spain, Portugal, Russia, the United States, Great Britain and South Africa.
She has been a collaborator in the Julia en la Onda programme, giving masterclasses on Mathematics. She started PiDay Spain and is the curator and co-creator of the exhibitions El sabor de las Matemáticas and Universos separadors dialogando . For these exhibitions, she was a guest lecturer in the Math Encounters cycle at MoMath in New York. She has collaborated with the Escultor Berrocal Foundation for the Arts. The encounter between Picasso and Mathematics was the reason for her induction speech at the AMC, given at the Museo Picasso Málaga.
She has received the Farola Ciencia Award in 2019, the Dosta con el Corazón Award in 2020 in recognition of her unconditional support for gypsy women, and was included in the Top 100 Leading Woman in 2019 and 2020.
